San Thome Church

The word Santhome or San Thome is derived from Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. The local Christian belief is that the apostle came to India in A.D.52, was martyred in A.D.72 at St.Thomas Mount in the City and was interred in Mylapore. A church was built over his tomb and this is known as the San Thome Basilica. The Basilica is one of three churches that claim to have been built over the tomb of an apostle. The other two are St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy and the church of Saint James the Great in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Commonly known as Santhome Church, the International Shrine of St. Thomas Basilica has an underground tomb chapel where pilgrims can pray in front of the sepulchre of St. Thomas. Superstitious people believe that sand taken from the tomb has miraculous healing powers. Marco Polo the great Venetian traveller visited the tomb in 1292 and made a record of his visit in his travel diaries:
"The Christians who go thither in pilgrimage take of the earth from the place where the saint was killed (or buried), and give a portion thereof to anyone who is sick of a quartan or a tertian fever ; and by the power of God and of St. Thomas the sick man is incontinently cured."--Travels of Marco Polo Vol.II by Yule Edited by Cordier. Faithful people have had to wait many years to get a little sand from the tomb, as it is only opened infrequently, at intervals of a few hundred years.
The church has made a beautiful credit card for pilgrims, the St. Thomas Card,[1] with a little of the St. Thomas sand embedded in it. This can be carried around like a normal credit card in a wallet or purse.

Soon, post offices to be like banks

Postal customers may soon be able to access their savings bank account in any post office in the city.

The department of posts is putting in place core banking solutions (CBS) at four of its head post offices in Chennai, and the process is expected to be completed by September. This means these post offices will become like banks and offer a range of services.

The head post offices on Anna Road and in T. Nagar, Mylapore and Tambaram will soon be networked via CBS, which is one of the postal department’s flagship projects.

But once CBS is implemented, customers can go to any post office covered under the system and carry out transactions. The project also envisages installing ATMs at these four post offices by October, so that their 2.5 lakh account-holders will be able to access their accounts at the swipe of a card.

Postmaster general, Chennai city region, Mervin Alexander said there are nearly 3.3 crore savings account-holders in the region. All postal employees are now being given extensive training in CBS, he added.

Mylapore Madhavaperumal Temple
The temple town of Mylapore abounds in places of worship which are ages old. One such temple is Madhavaperumal temple near Sanskrit college.

The temple is believed to be more than 800 years old and predates many the other temples in the area. Mention about this temple is found in Mayurapuri Mahatmiyam.

Presiding deity - Madhavaperumal

Thayar - Amirthavalli.

Sthala vriksha -Punnai tree

Holy waters -Santhana pushkarini

Puranic Lore

Sage Brighu who lived in this place, Madhavapuram where the temple now exists was childless for a long time and he prayed to Mahavishnu for a progeny. Mahalakshmi consort of Mahavishnu comes to the hermitage and the sage adopts her as his daughter and names her Amirthavalli. She blossoms into a beautiful damsel. Meanwhile Mahavishnu unable to bear the separation of Mahalakshmi also visits the hermitage and expresses his desire to marry her. He requests the sage to fulfill his desire and the sage complies to his wish. Mahavishnu incarnates as Madhavan.

The celestial wedding

The divine wedding of Mahavishnu with Mahalakshmi takes place on the auspicious Panguni Uthiram day in this holy place.

Santhana Pushkarini

The pond in the ashram of the sage came to be called Santhanapushkarini. There is a popular belief that the Lord will bless the childless with a child if they have a dip in the pushkarini and worship the deities. Madhavaperumal is in a sitting posture with his consort.
The two utsavar icons Periya Madhavan and Siriya Madhavan form a part of the divine set up. Periazhwar, one of the minstrels (Azhwars) is supposed to have incarnated near the temple.
