San Thome Church

The word Santhome or San Thome is derived from Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. The local Christian belief is that the apostle came to India in A.D.52, was martyred in A.D.72 at St.Thomas Mount in the City and was interred in Mylapore. A church was built over his tomb and this is known as the San Thome Basilica. The Basilica is one of three churches that claim to have been built over the tomb of an apostle. The other two are St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy and the church of Saint James the Great in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Commonly known as Santhome Church, the International Shrine of St. Thomas Basilica has an underground tomb chapel where pilgrims can pray in front of the sepulchre of St. Thomas. Superstitious people believe that sand taken from the tomb has miraculous healing powers. Marco Polo the great Venetian traveller visited the tomb in 1292 and made a record of his visit in his travel diaries:
"The Christians who go thither in pilgrimage take of the earth from the place where the saint was killed (or buried), and give a portion thereof to anyone who is sick of a quartan or a tertian fever ; and by the power of God and of St. Thomas the sick man is incontinently cured."--Travels of Marco Polo Vol.II by Yule Edited by Cordier. Faithful people have had to wait many years to get a little sand from the tomb, as it is only opened infrequently, at intervals of a few hundred years.
The church has made a beautiful credit card for pilgrims, the St. Thomas Card,[1] with a little of the St. Thomas sand embedded in it. This can be carried around like a normal credit card in a wallet or purse.

Soon, post offices to be like banks

Postal customers may soon be able to access their savings bank account in any post office in the city.

The department of posts is putting in place core banking solutions (CBS) at four of its head post offices in Chennai, and the process is expected to be completed by September. This means these post offices will become like banks and offer a range of services.

The head post offices on Anna Road and in T. Nagar, Mylapore and Tambaram will soon be networked via CBS, which is one of the postal department’s flagship projects.

But once CBS is implemented, customers can go to any post office covered under the system and carry out transactions. The project also envisages installing ATMs at these four post offices by October, so that their 2.5 lakh account-holders will be able to access their accounts at the swipe of a card.

Postmaster general, Chennai city region, Mervin Alexander said there are nearly 3.3 crore savings account-holders in the region. All postal employees are now being given extensive training in CBS, he added.

Mylapore Madhavaperumal Temple

Mylapore Madhavaperumal Temple
The temple town of Mylapore abounds in places of worship which are ages old. One such temple is Madhavaperumal temple near Sanskrit college.

The temple is believed to be more than 800 years old and predates many the other temples in the area. Mention about this temple is found in Mayurapuri Mahatmiyam.

Presiding deity - Madhavaperumal

Thayar - Amirthavalli.

Sthala vriksha -Punnai tree

Holy waters -Santhana pushkarini

Puranic Lore

Sage Brighu who lived in this place, Madhavapuram where the temple now exists was childless for a long time and he prayed to Mahavishnu for a progeny. Mahalakshmi consort of Mahavishnu comes to the hermitage and the sage adopts her as his daughter and names her Amirthavalli. She blossoms into a beautiful damsel. Meanwhile Mahavishnu unable to bear the separation of Mahalakshmi also visits the hermitage and expresses his desire to marry her. He requests the sage to fulfill his desire and the sage complies to his wish. Mahavishnu incarnates as Madhavan.

The celestial wedding

The divine wedding of Mahavishnu with Mahalakshmi takes place on the auspicious Panguni Uthiram day in this holy place.

Santhana Pushkarini

The pond in the ashram of the sage came to be called Santhanapushkarini. There is a popular belief that the Lord will bless the childless with a child if they have a dip in the pushkarini and worship the deities. Madhavaperumal is in a sitting posture with his consort.
The two utsavar icons Periya Madhavan and Siriya Madhavan form a part of the divine set up. Periazhwar, one of the minstrels (Azhwars) is supposed to have incarnated near the temple.

Ashvita Café – for traditional Indian cuisine in Chennai

Located in the busy streets of Mylapore, Ashvita Café is the very traditional Indian cuisine in Chennai. A small lane on Cathedral road, leads you to this reserved place. Addressed on number 11, 2nd Street, Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore, Chennai, the restaurant is a typical one for family dinners and romantic hang out with your beloved. Unlike most other restaurants in Chennai, this place has a stamp of its own.
Ashvita Café
The menu has a delightful mix of various combos and platters predominately of the Indian and Chinese variety. Of all, The Indian platter is indeed the most relished one, allowing one to enjoy a complete meal. This place is definitely a treat to your taste buds.

The green outdoor seating area is relaxing and beautiful. In stark contrast is the brighter inside dining room with a less rustic and more modern feel. The place also boasts off a nice water body, with a water fall flowing through a gold leaf painted backdrop. The place is easily accessible, quietly tucked away with an art gallery. The portions of the food served are extremely sufficient for a good meal.

The ambience is simple and subtle. The place is bifurcated into indoor and out door dining, well spaced with neatly arranged tables. The food, ambience, cost, servings and service all top the list. Ashvita provides a new culinary experience for the foodies in Chennai.

Ashvita is a place where you need time, for the "not so hurried up" pace of service, and the ample time you need to park your car inside the fences of this coffee house. Good place to hang out with friends. Good food as well.

The town of Mylapore predates British rule by several centuries. It was historically known as Vedapuri. As the available historical and archaeological evidence shows, it could well be the oldest part of Chennai, with written records of early settlements going back to the first century BC. It was known for its ancient port with a flourishing trade with the Roman Empire, receiving gold in exchange for its products like pepper and fine cloth. Ptolemy had recorded in the 2nd century AD that the port of Mylapore was known to the Greeks and the Romans. Mention has been made of the early settlement of Santhome by Arab travelers and merchants of the 9th and 10th centuries AD. Marco Polo visited the place in the late 13th century, and the Portuguese settled around Santhome in the early 16th century.
Mylapore was occupied by the Portuguese in 1523, who established the viceroyalty of "São Tomé de Meliapore" or "Saint Thomas of Mylapore." Portuguese rule lasted until 1749, except for a brief interregnum between 1662 and 1687, when the town was occupied by the French.
After 1749, the town fell into the hands of the British East India Company, who took possession of the settlement in the name of Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, the Nawab of Arcot. In that same year, Mylapore was incorporated into the administration of the Presidency of Madras. The settlement known as "Luz" developed during this period. As early as 1760, an English writer by the name of James Taylor applied for land in the region known as "Luce." The name "Luz" might have originated from this.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the town became the commercial and intellectual hub of Madras city and home to British-educated lawyers and statesmen. Some of the luminaries based in Mylapore included Sir V. Bhashyam Aiyangar, Sir S. Subramania Iyer, Sir T. Madhava Rao, Eardley Norton, Sir P. S. Sivaswami Iyer, Pennathur Subramania Iyer, V. Krishnaswamy Iyer,Sir C. P. Ramaswami Iyer, H Bhimasena Rau, C S Rama Rao Sahib, Subanthore Vasudeva Rao, CR Krishnaswamy Rao Sahib and the civil engineer C R Narayana Rao. Subanthore Vasudeva Rao's descendants still reside in his 100-year-old house near Kapaleeswarar Temple, Mylapore.
In recent times, increasing commercialization has changed the look of the area. Today, Mylapore is known for its residential colonies, temples, shopping malls, music halls and sabhas, along with old 19th century style residential buildings and houses.
